Humans, Climate Change and AI: One Earth, Running Out of Time

It's hot. Not a pleasant, sit-in-the-garden kind of hot; the kind that feels wrong. Europe is sweltering, the UK is bracing, and somewhere between the weather apps and the news cycles, most of us are getting on with our days as if this is just... summer.
I keep thinking: how did we get here?
More quietly, more worryingly: how much longer can our beloved earth sustain us?
We Used to Build Things That Lasted, and So Did We
Cast your mind back a few centuries. The Industrial Revolution, roughly the mid-1700s, starting in Britain and spreading fast, was one of the most dramatic shifts in human history. Steam engines. Coal. Factories pulling people off farms and into cities. In a matter of decades, the rhythm of human life changed entirely.
In that early era, even with all its grime and hardship, things were made to endure. The mills, the bridges, the tools, built to work hard and last long. Think of the iron bridges still standing across Britain, the Victorian sewers still running beneath London. Flawed, yes. Built with a kind of integrity nonetheless.
People repaired things. They passed them down. A grandmother's coat, a father's watch, a kitchen pot that outlasted everyone who owned it. There was respect built into the making.
Something else happened too, quietly and gradually: people began to be treated the same way as the things they made. As production scaled and profits became the measure of everything, human beings became units of output. Replaceable. Interchangeable. Workers discarded when the factory no longer needed them, communities hollowed out when the industry moved on. Things and people both became dispensable. We have never quite recovered from that shift in how we value what, and who, we have.
When Throwaway Became a Way of Life
By the 20th century, manufacturing had moved from making things that lasted to making things that sold, and kept selling. Planned obsolescence became a quiet industry doctrine. Make it good enough to buy. Not good enough to keep.
I read recently that Tupperware, the brand so famously well-made that families have owned the same set for thirty years, shut down production. Their problem? People simply didn't need to replace their containers. In any other era, that would be a mark of honour. In ours, it was a business failure. That says everything, doesn't it?
The things built a hundred years ago are still standing. The things built last year are already in landfill. We didn't just start making worse products; we built an entire economy around the cycle of wanting, buying, discarding, and wanting again. Fast fashion. Single-use everything. Devices engineered to slow down just as a newer model appears. Wardrobes refreshed every season, mountains of clothing worn once and thrown away, much of it ending up in vast dumps across the Global South, out of sight, out of mind.
All of it has a cost. Our mother earth has been quietly absorbing it.
The Developed World's Inconvenient Mirror
When the conversation turns to pollution, the gaze often drifts toward the developing world: the visible smog, the rivers choked with waste. Rapid industrialisation carries environmental costs wherever it happens; that much is true.
Look more closely, though. The highest per-capita carbon footprints belong overwhelmingly to the wealthiest nations. Our everyday normal, year-round air conditioning, frequent flights, plates full of meat, wardrobes that change with every trend, are things billions of people will never access. Each one carries a carbon weight that is anything but normal.
The rich got richer through centuries of extraction. The planet got hotter. History made sure those two things were never unrelated.
Now Comes AI, Beautiful, Powerful, but Not Without Cost
We are living through what many call the Fourth Industrial Revolution. AI is moving into every corner of life: healthcare, education, logistics, our own homes, and most of us experience it as invisible, effortless, almost magical.
It isn't weightless, though. The data centres that power everything from your search results to the AI tools reshaping industries consume enormous amounts of water, primarily to cool the servers running day and night. This is groundwater, drawn from the earth, in regions already under strain. Some tech companies, recognising the problem, have relocated their data centres to Scandinavia, using the cooler climate as a natural coolant. Sensible, for now. As global temperatures rise, even Scandinavia will warm. It is a solution borrowed from geography, and geography is changing beneath our feet.
We are making the same trade-off we always have: solve the immediate problem, push the long-term cost forward.
War, Rubble, and the Earth Nobody Speaks For
There is a dimension of this that I find myself returning to, one that rarely enters the climate conversation honestly: war.
AI has made conflict more efficient. Drones, precision systems, autonomous weapons, built with fossil fuels and deployed with fossil fuels, leaving behind scorched earth and rubble. When cities are bombed, the destruction doesn't disappear. Toxins seep into soil. Water sources are poisoned for years, sometimes decades. The air carries what the buildings once held.
We grieve the human cost of war, and we should, deeply. We speak of power, of politics, of humanity under siege. Have we ever stopped to ask what happens to our mother earth when she is the battlefield? The ground that grows our food, holds our water, sustains every living thing, she has no seat at the peace table. No one negotiates on her behalf.
She absorbs it all. Every bomb. Every chemical. Every city reduced to dust.
A Living Earth, Getting Tired
I think of the earth not as a living being in the way we typically define life, but as something deeper: an ancient, interconnected system that has been self-regulating and sustaining life for billions of years. James Lovelock spent decades trying to articulate this through his Gaia hypothesis, that the Earth functions as a living system, maintaining the conditions for life in ways we are only beginning to understand. We mostly ignored him and kept building coal plants.
The Earth is responding now. The heatwaves. The floods that come where floods never came before. The wildfires that don't stop. The species disappearing quietly, one by one. These are not random misfortunes. They are consequences, the accumulated weight of choices made across generations, now arriving all at once.
Our mother earth has been generous beyond measure. She has carried us through every revolution, every war, every excess. I find myself asking the question more and more: how much longer?
We Have One Earth, and We Need Each Other to Save Her
This cannot be fixed by one country, one policy, or one generation acting alone. Every industrial revolution, from the first to the fourth, has reshaped the world without asking the Earth's permission. The costs were always deferred onto the next decade, the next people, the next crisis. We cannot keep doing that.
What's needed is something harder and more hopeful than any single solution: a shared understanding, across borders and cultures, across the divide of rich and poor, that we are all living on the same ground. Not competing over it. Sharing it. Responsible for it together.
History shows what happens when humanity truly moves as one. We eradicated diseases that had killed for centuries. We came together to rebuild after the devastation of world wars. When the will is collective, the seemingly impossible becomes real.
The earth does not know our borders. It does not care for our politics. It is simply responding to what we have all, together, done to it, and it will respond the same way to every one of us, regardless of wealth, power, or geography.
We need to think as one. Act as one. Feel, together, the weight of what we stand to lose.
We have one Earth. She is the only home any of us has ever known. She deserves better from us than this.
Perhaps the next great revolution is not technological at all. Perhaps it is a revolution of human consciousness.
