The Illusion of Control
From childhood, many of us are taught to plan our lives with precision—study hard, set goals, climb the steps toward success. We are told that if we draw the map carefully enough, life will follow it. Yet the truth is very different. Plans falter, dreams slip through our fingers, and paths change in ways we never expected.
Another Force at Work
What becomes clear over time is that there is another force guiding us. Call it fate, the universe, or God’s plan—life is not random. What we think we want often escapes us, while what we truly need is placed before us. Sometimes this feels like loss, or even punishment. But with reflection, we see that many of these moments were not misfortunes but blessings in disguise.
Crisis and Victory
The Baha’i faith speaks of “crisis and victory”—a truth we can all recognise. Crisis strips us bare, confronts us with hardship, and often feels unbearable. Yet within every crisis lies the seed of victory. Through difficulty, we discover strengths we never knew we had, virtues we did not think were possible, and a character we could not have built any other way.
Gold in the Fire
Life is much like the fire that refines gold. Gold, in its raw state, is unshaped and unformed. It must pass through intense heat to be purified, softened, and moulded into something of beauty and worth. Without fire, gold would remain dull ore. Without trials, we remain unaware of our true capacity.
Becoming More Than We Imagined
Each of us is gold. Every crisis we endure is a fire that burns away what is unnecessary, shaping us into something greater. Though we may not understand the purpose now, each struggle bestows upon us qualities—resilience, patience, compassion—that become the very treasures of our soul.
Hope for the World
When we look at the world around us, we see crisis everywhere—conflict, injustice, uncertainty. It is easy to despair. Yet if we hold to the belief that every crisis contains its victory, then we also see hope. Just as individuals are refined through fire, so too can humanity be reshaped, purified, and prepared for a greater purpose.
Remember: You Are Gold
So, when the path is hard and the fire feels too strong, remember this: you are not breaking, you are becoming. You are gold being shaped. The victory may not yet be visible, but it is already being written.
